Description

Did you know that the water from most storm drains flows directly into streams, rivers, and Narragansett Bay? That means that anything dumped into those drains - such as chemicals, motor oil, and pet waste - pollutes our beautiful Bay. But you can make a difference by participating in our Storm Drain Marking project in East Providence! For this project you will glue markers that say "Don't Dump - Drains To Bay" to curbs above storm drains in that empty into the Runnins River and Hundred Acre Cove. Work will be in the east section of East Providence, south of Rt 44. See maps for exact areas.

NOTE: Due to the current need for social distancing, this opportunity is designed for individuals working alone or with members of their household. Open to ages 10+. Minors must work with a parent or guardian.

STEP ONE: Register your interest here! Let us know in the notes if there is a specific neighborhood or street you would like to mark, and any other details. We will email you and confirm your area, and arrange to drop off supplies for you.

STEP TWO: Review all the materials so you know what to do! It's simple but there are a few important procedures to follow, such as safety tips and how to record and report which streets you marked.

STEP THREE: Start marking! See a demonstration here. Note that this is a very weather dependent project. Night time temperatures must be above 40 degrees and the streets must be dry. Therefore it is better to plan a flexible, ongoing effort rather than one big project day.

STEP FOUR: Report back! You will keep track of how many markers you used, where you placed them, and how much time you spent on the project.

Register here and we will plan your project!
