It was our pleasure to celebrate three new exhibitions last night, and we want to congratulate all involved for their hard work and dedication. ๐™๐™ž๐™ง๐™จ๐™ฉ ๐™‡๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™š๐™ง๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ช๐™ง๐™š ๐™‹๐™ง๐™ค๐™Ÿ๐™š๐™˜๐™ฉ utilizes newly released Apple Vision Pro headsets to present the immersive VR experience ๐™‹๐™–๐™™๐™–๐™ฌ๐™š, developed over a two-year period by Guild Hall Community Artists-in-Residence Wunetu Wequai Tarrant and Christian Scheider. The exhibition also features video works by the Shinnecock language revitalization collective Ayim Kutoowonk and interviews with members of the Shinnecock Nation. ๐™๐™š๐™™ ๐˜พ๐™–๐™ง๐™š๐™ฎ: ๐™Œ๐™ช๐™š๐™š๐™ง ๐™–๐™จ ๐™๐™ค๐™ก๐™ , organized by Matthew Nichols, PhD, independent curator, highlights the artistโ€™s small yet compelling body of work chronicling his life and relationships, and pictures facets of queer culture. Careyโ€™s faux-naรฏf paintings depict some of his favorite haunts in New York and celebrate the creative lives of other gay men. ๐™Ž๐™ฅ๐™ž๐™ฃ ๐™– ๐™”๐™–๐™ง๐™ฃ delves into the complex relationship between textile labor and storytelling, examining the use of textiles as vehicles for the preservation of memories and knowledge. This exhibition is curated by Estrellita Brodsky, founder and director of ANOTHER SPACE, New York, with Raรบl Martinez. All three are on view now through July 14. Galleries are open Friday to Monday, 12-5 PM, and museum admission is always free. None of this could have been accomplished without our exceptionally hardworking staff, specifically Melanie Crader, Anthony Madonna, Philippa Content, and Giulia Mascali. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ ๐Ÿ“ธ Jessica Dalene Photography

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Joe Zucker, Guild Hall Academy member and permanent collection artist, most recently shown as part of the 2021-2022 exhibition Joe Zucker was born in Chicago in 1941 and received a B.F.A. from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1964 and an M.F.A. from the same institution in 1966. In announcing his passing this week, ArtNews referred to Zucker as โ€œone of the most elusive talents to emerge in the wake of the Abstract Expressionist boom of the postwar era.โ€ Zucker regarded his work as conceptual and literal rather than expressive, and his signature techniques involved dipping wads of cotton into paint and gluing them to a canvas, and cords and cardboard strung between wood frames in a tight grid formation, then thickly painted between the lines. Zuckerโ€™s work is in extensive public collections, including The Museum of Modern Art, The National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, The New Museum, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Tel Aviv Museum, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Brooklyn Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Parrish Art Museum, Guild Hall, and many others. Joe Zucker moved to East Hampton in 1982, immersing himself in the community beyond the art world as a fisherman and a beloved volunteer coach for the Bridgehampton High School basketball team. He was featured in the 2017 documentary ๐˜’๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜‰๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด, by Orson and Ben Cummings, produced by Shaquille O'Neal. Please join us in congratulating 2024 Guild Hall William P. Rayner Artist-in-Residence ๐—ช๐—ต๐—ถ๐˜๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜† ๐—ช๐—ต๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฒ, who has been nominated for a TONY Award for her direction of the Jocelyn Bioh play, ๐™… Biohโ€™s play, which received 5 nominations, welcomes you into Jajaโ€™s bustling hair braiding salon in Harlem where every day, a lively and eclectic group of West African immigrant hair braiders create masterpieces on the heads of neighborhood women. However, the uncertainty of their circumstances simmers below the surface of their lives, and when it boils over, it forces this tight-knit community to confront what it means to be an outsider on the edge of the place they call home. The production played its final performance at Broadwayโ€™s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on November 19, 2023. As a 2024 resident artist, Whitney White will work alongside award-winning writer and director Maxim Pozdorovkin with a collective of performing arts and new media artists to develop their multi-media performance piece, ๐™๐™๐™š ๐˜พ๐™–๐™จ๐™š ๐™ค๐™› ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™Ž๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™–๐™ฃ๐™œ๐™š๐™ง combines Shakespeareโ€™s words with Whiteโ€™s original text and music. The title, taken from a passage attributed to Shakespeare, is one of the earliest known and most impassioned defenses of a compassionate refugee policy. The performance explores themes of immigration, borders, and crossings, and the celebration that unexpected human connections can ultimately bring. While in-residence, White and Pozdorovkin will work with curator and 2024 GH WPR AiR Thought Partner, Monique Long. Whitney White. Born in New York City in 1927, the American abstract painter lived and traveled with her diplomat husband in Germany, Russia, Hong Kong, Washington, D.C., Paris, Haiti, and New York, absorbing the various influences and traditions of each place into her work. Throughout a dedicated career spanning over five decades, Isham used painting, lithography, book arts, and collage to explore her enduring interest in philosophy and nature, which she cited as her greatest teacher. At her home and studio in the Sagaponack, Isham embraced daring techniques to evoke her environment. Combing her beachy surroundings, Isham would hold seaweed, sponges, and other substances against canvas, using an airbrush to spray acrylic paint around them. This approach resulted in dynamic storms of color across the surface of her light-filled canvases that are highly spiritual and meditative in essence. ๐Ÿ“ธ Sheila Isham at her studio in Sagaponack, N.Y., in 1982. We want to congratulate the latest artists to complete the Guild Hall William P. Rayner Artists-in-Residence Program, duos LoVid and MSHR, who have been working together at The Tower for the past month. LoVid and MSHR drew on their individual and shared audio/visual aesthetic and mutual appreciation of each otherโ€™s work and process to realize their long dream of recording and publishing an LP together. A vinyl 12โ€ split picture-disk including music recorded and edited at Guild Hall, using their signature handmade synthesizers and visual content, will appear as an album cover with supplemental visual materials. Last night LoVid and MSHR presented the culmination of 4 weeks of productive collaboration with an audio/video spectacle. We canโ€™t wait to see (and hear) whatโ€™s next! The Guild Hall William P.
