Researchers at Northwestern University are recruiting participants in the Boston area for a paid research study.
The purpose of this study is to understand how people who are blind or low vision learn to use new software-based tools. This may include, but is not limited to, learning to use document preparation tools (e.g., Microsoft Office and Google Docs), communication software (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Slack), and more. We want to know about the learning materials (e.g., audio/video tutorials, written guides, online/in-person courses) or strategies you use for learning software-based tools.
Eligibility CriteriaYou must be blind or low vision, be age 18 or older, speak English, be familiar with using macOS and VoiceOver screen reader, and live in or near Boston, Massachusetts. You will also need to fill out the questionnaire below.
Information About the Research Study
Based on the questionnaire responses. selected eligible individuals will be invited to participate in an audio and screen-recorded study. The study will take place in-person at one of these following locations: (i) Carroll Center for the Blind in Newton, MA or (ii) a research lab at the Northeastern University campus in Boston, MA. We will ask you questions about your current practices for learning to use software tools. We will also ask you to participate in a series of activities on a computer where you will use some learning materials (e.g., tutorials or user guides) to become familiar with new software-based tasks. This technology testing session will last no longer than 120 minutes and take place in either April or May. All invited participants who attend and complete the technology testing session will each receive $100 cash at the end of their session.
